I spent a Colorado winter in New Zealand, enjoying summer along the rugged west coast. Piha quickly became one of my favorite spots, with its wild beaches, black sand, and crashing waves. It was the perfect setting for Rosalie and Myles’s sunset engagement session. Even more special, it was where Myles proposed just a week before, adding extra magic to the day.
Piha is a seaside village west of Auckland, known for Lion Rock, incredible surf, and dramatic coastline. I scouted a few locations before the session and immediately fell in love with the scenery. Lion Rock, where Myles proposed, became the centerpiece of their engagement photos. From the moment I met them, Rosalie and Myles moved with ease and joy, making every shot effortless. Their energy and laughter filled the beach, and it was impossible not to capture their love naturally.
As the sun began to set, golden light bathed the black sand and waves. They strolled along the shore, holding hands, sharing quiet, intimate moments, and laughing together. When the sun dipped lower, we incorporated Myles’s vintage car for final shots, adding personality and charm. The dramatic scenery, warm light, and their playful connection made the session feel unforgettable.
By the end of the evening, it was clear why Piha was so special to them. Of all the couples I photographed in New Zealand, Rosalie and Myles stood out for their adventurous spirit and genuine connection. Their sunset engagement session in Piha captured joy, romance, and the kind of coastal magic only New Zealand can provide. It is a day—and a story—I will never forget.
